ADHD Therapy in Lehi

Are You Looking For ADHD Support?

  • Have you or your child been diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or do you suspect a diagnosis is present?

  • Are issues like disorganization, poor time management, a lack of focus, or relational challenges getting in the way of your success?

  • Do you wish you had better or more effective tools for managing daily tasks and responsibilities?

Whether or not an official diagnosis is present, ADHD can pose a lot of challenges to daily life. In school, at work, and at home, ADHD can show up in many ways, including forgetfulness, disorganization, impulsivity, and an inability to communicate with others. If deadlines and daily tasks are getting frequently missed, it may be a sign that your executive functioning—or the part of the brain that remembers, organizes information, and solves problems—needs assistance.

ADHD Is More Than Anxiety

Oftentimes, particularly among people who are not officially diagnosed with ADHD, there is a misconception that new or worsening symptoms are simply just anxiety. And while anxiety often commonly co-occurs with ADHD, it’s important not to conflate symptoms. In general, anxiety is signaled by panicked, catastrophic thinking patterns, while ADHD tends to yield distracted, hyperactive, and impulsive thinking patterns.

Furthermore, ADHD symptoms can vary according to age and gender. Children and adults may experience different symptoms altogether, which can cause some individuals to get misdiagnosed or overlook ADHD as the primary cause of their struggles.

At Willow Shore Counseling, we work with children, teens, and adults in therapy to alleviate some of the daily burdens that are made worse by ADHD. As we collaborate to determine what kinds of treatment interventions are best suited to your unique experience of ADHD, you can develop lasting skills, insights, and solutions on the path to optimal wellbeing.

Do You Have Questions About ADHD Therapy?

ADHD Symptoms Can Be Managed

ADHD is a relatively common diagnosis, particularly among children. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that over 11 percent of individuals ages 3 to 17 will be diagnosed, while only around 5 percent of adults will be labeled as having ADHD. [1] Because ADHD symptoms vary among demographics, it’s not uncommon for women to be diagnosed later in life since symptoms look different between girls and boys in childhood.

There are a variety of genetic and environmental factors that may contribute to the onset of ADHD, including brain injuries, trauma, low birthweight, and imbalanced neurotransmitters. In many studies, ADHD has been shown to have a direct correlation with the brain areas that are responsible for attention, impulse control, and daily functioning.

That said, a lot remains unknown about the condition, and many people who have ADHD struggle with feelings of inadequacy, a lack of self-compassion or self-awareness, and a general sense that they’re failing or the world is not made for them.

At our practice, we don’t view ADHD as a problem to be fixed but rather an aspect of your life that can build on your strengths and be managed with the right treatment. Let’s work together in therapy to figure out how to make your ADHD work for you.

ADHD Therapy Is Available At Willow Shore Counseling

Therapy for ADHD through our practice is available to adults, teens, and children six and over. In addition to individual treatment, we offer coaching for parents of children with ADHD to help support and reinforce skills at home.

While our therapists cannot offer full psychological evaluations to solidify a diagnosis of ADHD or other possible neurodevelopmental or learning disabilities, we are happy to refer you to trusted psychologists that can.

Our Approach

We aim for the “gold standard” treatment approach, which is usually a combination of skills building, therapeutic support, and medication. However, we understand that medication is not for everyone, and we will never push you to do anything you aren’t comfortable with in therapy. Instead, we will individualize this process to your needs and goals, honoring the specific ways that ADHD helps or hinders your life.

From there, your therapist will give you tools for alleviating some of the shame and negative beliefs that have resulted from your ADHD symptoms. As we begin to challenge harmful patterns and narratives, we can get you to a place where you have more capacity for helpful skills and healthy self-talk.

Some of the approaches we use in counseling for ADHD are:

  • Mindfulness – incorporating yoga, grounding techniques, and other exercises, you will learn skills for tuning in and staying focused

  • Behavioral therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) – these approaches help connect your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, allowing you to better understand and manage your stress response

  • Psychoeducation and coaching – as you learn more about how your unique brain processes information, you can improve organization, time management, impulsivity, and relationships

  • Marriage/couples counseling – particularly if ADHD is impacting your relationship, we will work to heal relational patterns, enhance communication, and foster connection on the path to attunement

This process is not about “fixing” you or finding a “cure”—it’s about managing ADHD in a way that makes sense for your life. With the right support and combination of tools, you or your child can learn to navigate the more frustrating aspects of ADHD, finding freedom, fulfillment, and connection along the way.

Common Concerns About Therapy For ADHD…

  • You do not have to have an official ADHD diagnosis in order to benefit from therapy. If you struggle with disorganization, focus, time management, and/or impulsivity, counseling can help you learn how to combat some of the executive functioning challenges that you experience.

Our therapists are not licensed to perform psychological assessments or prescribe medication, but we have many trusted referrals here in town if you’re interested.

  • Our therapists are committed to making this process feel as safe as possible, and we will never force you to do anything that makes you uncomfortable. During counseling, our job is to present you with the facts of what ADHD is, how it impacts the brain, and what your options are for managing symptoms.

We are specially trained to individualize this process to your/your child’s needs, and our goal is to figure out solutions that make sense for you. There are a lot of useful things we can do in therapy besides medication that can enhance your quality of life and help you thrive with ADHD.

  • If you’re a parent seeking therapy for a child with ADHD, it’s really important to have you involved in this process! While we strive to create a client-centered counseling experience, our therapists know that as a parent, your role and perspective are invaluable to your child’s support.

Through coaching, we will work with you to develop strategies and support skills at home. We also want to understand some of the frustrations you face as a parent of a child with ADHD so that we can better understand your child’s routine, environment, and relationships. Our hope is to foster more connection in your child’s life so they can feel more functional, aware, and confident on a day-to-day basis.
